titleOfInvention | A PROCEDURE FOR THE PREPARATION OF AN AQUEOUS COMPOSITION CONTAINING IRON. |
abstract | A process for the preparation of an aqueous iron-containing composition suitable for parenteral administration in human and veterinary medicine, which process is characterized in that a) a trivalent water-soluble iron compound and b) a physiologically safe water-swellable polymer, consisting of i) at least one hydroxycarboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of arabic acid, gluconic acid and glucoheptonic acid and salts and lactones derived therefrom; ii) at least one polyvalent alcohol selected from the group consisting of glycerin, polyglycerins, tetrites, pentites, hexites, hepptites, derivatives partially etherified with alcohol groups containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms of said polyhydric alcohols, and derivatives partially etherified with hydroxyalkyl groups containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms of said polyvalent alcohols; and iii) at least one polymerization agent selected from the group consisting of dihalohydrins and epihalohydrins and diepoxides derived therefrom, and mixtures thereof, are reacted in aqueous solution, after which the pH of the reaction mixture is adjusted by addition of alkali such that at the end of the reaction it is from about 10 to about 14, after which the iron-containing reaction product is precipitated and, if desired, further purified, possibly by repeated dissolution operations and precipitation and then, if desired after drying, is dissolved in water under sterile conditions.
