titleOfInvention | A PROCEDURE FOR THE FORMATION OF A POLYMER. |
abstract | Coating compositions comprise a solution of a copolymer having a backbone derived from (a) an ethylenically unsaturated monomer and (b) monomers of the formula: and (c) monomers of the formula: in which R1 is C 2 -C 20 hydrocarbon, R2 is hydrogen or C 1 -C 4 alkyl, R3 and R4 are hydrogen C 1 -C 4 alkyl or -CH 2 OCOR8, R5 is C 1 -C 6 aliphatic hydrocarbon, R6 and R7 are hydrogen or C 1 -C 6 alkyl, R8 is C 3 -C 21 hydrocarbon and R9 is hydrogen or methyl. Exemplified monomers (a) are (1) methyl and butyl methacrylates (4) styrene, methyl methacrylate and acrylonitrile, (5) styrene and butyl methacrylate, (6) methyl and cyclohexyl methacrylates and (7) methyl and 2-ethylhexyl methacrylates. Monomer (b) is preferably the reaction product of linseed oil or tall oil fatty acid with tris (hydroxymethyl) aminomethane reacted with formaldehyde, and (c) is t-butylaminoethyl or dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate. The polymers are formed in solution e.g. in toluene/acetone or toluene/isopropanol/ethyl acetate and the resulting solution used to form a film on steel sheet treated with zinc phosphate or is mixed with an alkyd or acrylic or acrylic-alkyd resin to form a paint. Also present in the paints are titanium dioxide, cobalt and manganese naphthenates, and lead tallate and hydrocarbon solvent. The paints are sprayed onto steel panels primed with pigmented alkyd' resin primer or coated with thermosetting acrylic resin pigmented nitrocellulose primer surfacer, alkyd or alkyd melamine enamel, acrylic lacquer, or pigmented epoxy primer and air dried. The acrylic-alkyd resin used is formed by condensation of a styrene/methyl. methacrylate/methacrylic acid copolymer with phthalic anhydride, pentaerythritol, linseed oil fatty acid and benzoic acid. |
