titleOfInvention A PROCEDURE FOR THE PREPARATION OF PHENYL DERIVATIVES.
abstract The invention comprises compounds of the formula where X is halogen, formyl, carboxy, lower alkoxycarbonyl, lower alkenyloxycarbonyl, aryloxycarbonyl, aralkyloxycarbonyl, lower alkoxymethylene, lower alkenyloxymethylene, aryloxymethylene, aralkyloxymethylene or carbamyl which may be lower alkyl substituted, Y is H or lower alkyl and Z is a residue of the formula where R is H or R1 is H, methyl, ethyl or isopropyl, R2 and R3 are H or methyl, R4 is H or lower alkyl, A is H or halogen, M is H, OH or halogen, B, E and G are H or A with B and M with either E or G denote a carbon-carbon bond, an oxygen bridge or a sulphur bridge with the proviso that when X is para to Z and R4 is H then R1, R2 and R3 together have at least 2 carbon atoms, or a residue of the formula where D and N are H or halogen and A with B, D with either E or G and M with N can denote a carbon-carbon bond, an oxygen bridge or a sulphur bridge, or a residue of the formula where R5 is H or lower alkyl, R6 is H, methyl or ethyl, L is H, and A with B, D with E and M with either L or G can denote a carbon-carbon bond, an oxygen bridge or a sulphur bridge or a residue of the formula where K is H or halogen and A with B, D with E, K with either L or G and M with N can denote a carbon-carbon bond, an oxygen bridge or a sulphur bridge. The lower alkyl, alkoxy and alkenyl groups contain up to 6 carbon atoms. The compounds are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula where the bond represented by dots can be hydrogenated with a compound of the formula where X1 is halogen or an acetalized aldehyde group, by means of a Grignard reaction and, if desired, either dehydrating a hydroxy-halide obtained treating the dehydration product with carbon dioxide by means of a Grignard reaction, esterifying, amidating or reducing the acid obtained and also if desired etherifying the alcohol or, if desired, hydrolysing the hydroxyacetal obtained, dehydrating the hydroxyaldehyde obtained and, also if desired, dehydrating the hydroxy-aldehyde, reducing the dehydration product and etherifying the resulting alcohol or oxidizing the dehydration product and esterifying or amidating the resulting acid and, if desired, hydrogenating, epoxidizing, episulphidizing or hydrohalogenating the aldehyde, acid, ester, amide or ether obtained. The compounds are useful in the control of pests, particularly insects, and the clothes moth, flour moth and cotton bug are mentioned. Thus, the compounds may be applied, particularly in the form of a composition with a suitable inert carrier, as a pesticide, to foodstuffs, feeds, textiles, plants, seeds or animals. The compositions may be in the form of emulsions, suspensions, dusting agents, solutions or aerosols and may contain additional ingredients such as emulsifiers, dispersing agents, wetting agents or other active substances (e.g. fungicides, bactericides, nematocides and fertilizers).
