abstract A lightning arrester (see Division H2) includes a control gap connected across one of a stack of main spark gaps, the control gap being sealed and filled with a gas mixture containing tritium. As shown in Fig. 2, the control gap 25 is formed by two cup-shaped metal electrodes 30, 31 with opposed planar parallel surfaces 32, 33. The electrodes are separated by a ceramic tube 35 to which they may be secured by brazing at flanges 36, 37. The gap is filled, by way of a tube 39, with a mixture of 5% hydrogen and 95% nitrogen together with sufficient tritium to ensure a constant sparkover voltage during the arrester lifetime. Sparkover is initiated both by electrons produced directly by beta decay and by secondary electrons produced at the electrodes.
