titleOfInvention A PROCEDURE FOR THE PREPARATION OF A DIRECT DENTAL FILLING MATERIAL.
abstract ' Polymerizable binders which are suitable for use as the binder resin in direct dental filling materials comprise (a) at least 85% by weight of the binder of a mixture of (i) the bismethacrylate ester of the formula d (ii) bisphenol A dimethacrylate in a weight ratio of from 1: 0.05 to 1: 0.33 and (b) a monomer which reduces the viscosity of the binder. Monomer (b) may be a mono- or poly- (meth)acrylate ester, e.g. methyl methacrylate and mono- or poly-glycol dimethacrylates such as triethylene glycol dimethacrylate. A small amount of methacrylic acid is preferably also included in the binder. To form a dental filling material the binder is admixed with a finelydivided inorganic filler and a catalyst for effecting polymerization of the binder. The filler may be, for example, silica, quartz, glass beads or aluminium oxide and is desirably treated with a keying agent (e.g. an unsaturated silane) to improve the binding of the binder resin to the filler. The catalyst used is preferably a combination of a peroxide, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, and an activator of the formula . where R is -H or -CH 3 and X is -CH 2 CH 2 OH, -C 2 H 5 or -CH 3 , e.g. p-tolyl-diethanolamine. The binder may also include a polymerization inhibitor such as 2,6-di-t-butyl-p-cresol.
