titleOfInvention PROCEDURE TO PREPARE A HEAT-SEATABLE COMPOSITION.
abstract Thermosetting coating compositions, which are stable for prolonged storage periods, are prepared by dissolving in a solvent (a) at least one thermoplastic copolymer of 0-45% (by weight of the copolymer) of an aryl vinyl compound, 0-6% of an [alpha], #-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, 4-10% of a hydroxyalkyl ester of an [alpha], #-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, and 45-90% of another ester of an [alpha], #-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid having a C 2 -C 8 aliphatic alcohol moiety and (b) 10-40% by weight (based on the weight of the copolymer) of a thermosetting alkylated aminbplast resin which is an alkylated condensation product of an aldehyde, e.g. formaldehyde, with urea, thiourea, melamine, benzoguanamine or dicyandiamide and heating the solution of (a) and (b) at 60 -110 C for from 15 minutes to 8 hours so as to effect partial condensation between (a) and (b). In component (a) the aryl vinyl compound may be styrene, [alpha]- methyl styrene and/or vinyl toluene, the acid monomer may be acrylic, methacrylic and/or itaconic acid, and the ester monomers are preferably acrylates or methacrylates. The solvent used may be xylene, butanol, glycol monoethyl ether acetate, aromatic petroleum solvent, and mixtures thereof. The compositions can be pigmented, e.g. with titanium dioxide. Coatings of high gloss can be obtained, even with high pigment content, after baking at temperatures above 100 C. In an Example compositions having a spraying viscosity are applied in two successive coats (wet on wet) to a phosphate-coated steel plate and baked at 150 C.
