abstract A viscous oily product suitable for treating soil to improve the state of aggregation thereof and to increase the rate of growth of plants growing therein is obtained by mixing an alkanolamine with lignin, lignin sulphonic acid, or a lignin sulphonate and allowing the mixture to stand at a temperature not greater than 55 C. until the oil has formed, absorption of oxygen and evolution of ammonia taking place during the formation of the oil. The lignin used is preferably one derived from the alkaline reduction of wood to pulp and which is free from sugars, hemicelluloses and other foreign matter liable to decomposition by fermentation or otherwise. The alkanolamine may be a mono-, di- or tri-alkanolamine, especially triethanolamine. Examples are given in which lignin and sodium lignin sulphonate respectively are reacted with triethanolamine and with various other alkanolamines using different proportions of the reactants in each case. The products are soluble in water and alcohols.
