titleOfInvention | A PROCEDURE FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF ELEMENTAL SULFUR. |
abstract | Elemental sulphur is prepared by reacting hydrogen sulphide with sulphur dioxide, in the presence of a catalyst of the formula wherein A is a radical R 2 or M 2 M 1 and M 2 are metals of Group 1A or together are a metal of Group 2A R 1 and R 2 are monovalent hydrocarbon radicals or -(R1-O) n -R11 radicals, wherein R1 is a divalent hydrocarbon radical and R11 is hydrogen or a monovalent hydrocarbon radical and X 1 , X 2 , X 3 and X 4 are oxygen or sulphur. Numerous catalysts are specified, of which disodium monobutyl phosphate, potassium dibutyl phosphate, sodium phenyl cyclohexyl phosphate, potassium diisobutyl di-thiophosphate and dipotassium diphenylether phosphate are typical. The catalyst may be either dissolved, e.g. sulpholane, heavy alcohols, orthophosphoric acid triesters, alkylene glycols, polyalkyleneglycols and their ethers and esters, or deposited on a solid carrier of which several examples are given. The reaction is preferably carried out at a temperature between 20 and 160 C., and, depending upon this temperature, the sulphur may be obtained in the liquid or solid form which may be removed by e.g. filtration or decantation. |
