abstract A process for preparing an ester of a penicillin or penicillin sulphoxide comprises commingling phosgene, carbonyl bromide, carbonyl fluoride or thiophosgene with a liquid mixture of (a) the penicillin or penicillin sulphoxide in the acid form or an alkali metal salt thereof, (b) an alcohol or phenol corresponding to the desired ester, and (c) a hydrogen halide acceptor in (d) an inert organic liquid diluent at a temperature not above 40 C. Penicillin V sulphoxide is prepared by treating penicillin V with hydrogen peroxide.
