abstract A column containing exhausted weak base resin and exhausted strong base resin, said resins being hydraulically classifiable into upper and lower layers respectively when the weak base is in the regenerated form and the strong base is in the unregenerated form, is regenerated by first regenerating the weak base resin and then regenerating the strong base resin after passing liquid upwardly through the resins to stratify them if they are not already so stratified. The weak base resin may be regenerated by contacting both resins with an aqueous solution of ammonia or by means of an alkali metal hydroxide in aqueous solution e.g. 2-5% by weight NaOH solution.
