titleOfInvention | CONTINUOUS PROCEDURE TO PREPARE POLYMERS. |
abstract | Alfin polymers are obtained by continuously blending monomer, alfin catalyst, molecular weight modifier, and solvent (or diluent), continuously polymerizing at above 100 F., and continuously separating volatile materials from the mixture obtained by quenching in water and steam distilling the resulting dispersion, and thereafter recovering solvent and, optionally, monomer, for recycling, and recovering the alfin polymer. The reaction mixture may be washed with water prior to waterquenching. The solvent is suitably the same for the three steps of forming a sodium dispersion, forming an alfin catalyst therefrom, and polymerizing using the catalyst. Suitable monomers are conjugated dienes and alkenyl aromatic compounds, the polymerization of butadiene and of isoprene, and the copolymerization of butadiene with styrene or isoprene (exemplified) being particularly mentioned. Two detailed flow diagrams (not shown) are provided. |
