titleOfInvention A METHOD TO SEPARATE AND REMOVE RADIOACTIVE SOLIDS FROM A CONTAMINATED LIQUID.
abstract Radioactive solids are removed from a contaminated liquid by a process comprising the steps (a) passing the liquid through a filter precoated with finely-divided particles (b) immersing the filter in a cleaning liquid and passing a gas through in the reverse direction (c) draining the filter and passing a backwash liquid in reverse flow to transfer the finelydivided particles and radioactive solids to a settling tank and (d) centrifuging and discarding the residue from the settling tank. The cleaning liquid is preferably warm water, but an alcohol, carbon tetrachloride, or detergent or soap solution are also suitable the gas is preferably air, but may also be nitrogen or oxygen. The finely-divided particles may be an anion or cation exchange resin, several of which are specified, or may be diatomaceous earth. A suitable arrangement of apparatus is shown diagrammatically. The process may be used for the treatment of steam condensate in a boiling water nuclear reactor system.
