titleOfInvention IMPROVEMENT IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF LEAD-ACID ACCUMULATOR BATTERIES.
abstract An accumulator, 10, activated by addition of water comprises a lead peroxide positive electrode, a spongy lead negative electrode and an electrolyte precursor comprising sulphuric acid gelled with boron phosphate. Each cell may have a block, 16, of alternate positive and negative electrodes with separators in between. The gel may be prepared by mixing at room temperature or 100 C. a solution of boric acid or boric anhydride in sulphuric acid with a solution of phosphoric acid or phosphoric anhydride in sulphuric acid. The concentration of the sulphuric acid may be between 82% concentrated acid and 10% oleum and 1 mol. of boron phosphate may be present in the gel per 40 to 200 mols of acid. The gel may be situated in container 22, water being added via vent tube 30 so that it covers the plates before contacting the gel. Gel (not shown) may also be situated in the space, 37, below the plates. The container 22 may be of polyethylene or polypropylene and may have holes, 34, in the bottom to admit the water. The holes may be closed by a water-soluble, sulphuric acid-insoluble cover made, for example, from polyethylene oxide, polypropylene oxide or magnesium oxide. The accumulator case may be of hard rubber, or polypropylene and may be sealed before use with adhesive tape. It may contain magnesium oxide to neutralize any acid exuded from the gel.
