titleOfInvention IMPROVEMENTS INTRODUCED IN THE MANUFACTURE OF POST-STRESSED RODS FOR CONCRETE STRUCTURES.
abstract A tendon 4 in a pre-stressed concrete structure, comprises one or more "wires" 8 coated tightly and uniformly with a plastics material 10 which provides a coefficient of friction between the "wire" and coating of not more than 0.09. By "wire" is meant a filamentary material having an elastic limit of at least 150,000 psi, e.g. carbon steel or fibre glass. The wire diameter may be less than 0.03 ins. The plastics coating 10 may be up to 0.05 inches thick and formed about the wire by extrusion moulding. The plastic coating may be made of tetrafluoroethylene polymers and copolymers, polyamides and copolymers thereof, polyolefines, e.g. polyethylene and polypropylene, polystyrene, ABS resins, halogenated polyolefines, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, ethylene-methacrylic acid copolymer polyoxymethylene or polyethylene terephthalate. A lubricant may be as a film on the wire or it may be incorporated into the plastics coating. Specifled lubricants are (a) graphite, molybdenum disulphide and oils, e.g. silicone oil, for incorporation in the plastics and (b) mineral oils, hydrocarbon oils, graphites, and fluorocarbon polymers used alone or in combination with oil for use as a layer on the wire. A corrosion inhibitor, e.g. sodium nitriate ethanolamine or lauryl amine and a dispersing agent e.g. sulphonated hydrocarbons, sulphonamides and fatty acid salts can be present on the wire. In a modification, the "wire" has a first coating of plastics applied directly to the wire and a lubricant present between this first coating and a second coating functioning as the abovementioned coating. The tendon may be formed with a plurality of coated and lubricated wires in side-by-side and preferably separable, arrangement, see Figs. 6-11 not shown. The tendon is used for post-tensioning in concrete articles to hold the latter under compression. The tendon may lay in curved bent or rectilinear paths in the concrete. The total angle through which the tendon curves or bends may be up to 2000 . The tendon 4 may be anchored in a crimped metal sheath 92, the latter abutting a bearing plate 80, see Figs. 24-26 not shown. The anchoring may be filled with grouting.
