titleOfInvention PROCEDURE FOR THE PREPARATION OF 4,4'-DIBROMOBENZYL ACID ESTERS.
abstract The invention relates to 4-41-dibromobenzylic acid esters of the general formula in which R represents the methyl, ethyl, npropyl or a butyl radical, a halogeno alkyl radical of from 2 to 4 carbon atoms, an unsubstituted or halogenated alkenyl radical of from 2 to 5 carbon atoms or an unsubstituted or halogenated alkinyl radical of from 3 to 5 carbon atoms. Compounds claimed per se are the methyl and ethyl esters. The compounds may be prepared by reacting a compound of the general formula with a compound of a general formula RY in which X and Y are radicals which, with the exception of an oxygen atom, contained in one of these symbols are split off during the reaction. The acid may be reacted with a reactive ester, preferably with a halide of an aliphatic alcohol ROH. In an example, to 4,41-dibromobenzylic acid dissolved in dimethyl formamide are added potassium hydroxide and methyl iodide and the methyl ester subsequently extracted. This can also be obtained by reacting an aqueous solution of a potassium salt of the acid with dimethyl sulphate.
