titleOfInvention PROCEDURE FOR OBTAINING COPOLYMERS BASED ON VINYL CHLORIDE.
abstract A vinyl chloride copolymer that can be crosslinked by organic peroxides is produced by polymerizing 3 to 50 parts by weight of a mixture of a diolefin and at least one monomer selected from the nitrile and esters of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids in the presence of 100 parts of a copolymer containing from 75 to 95% by weight of vinyl chloride and correspondingly from 25 to 5% of a monomer containing at least 8 carbon atoms selected from the vinyl esters of monocarboxylic acids, the esters of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids and alkyl vinyl ethers. Specified diolefins are butadiene, isoprene and 2-chlorobutadiene and the comonomer may be acrylonitrile, fumaronitrile, methacrylonitrile or a C 1 to C 4 -alkyl acrylate or methacrylate. The vinyl chloride copolymer with, e.g. vinyl laurate, palmitate or stearate, a C 6 to C 12 -alkyl maleate, fumarate, acrylate or methacrylate or a C 12 to C 18 -alkyl vinyl ether may be produced in an aqueous medium, in which the diolefin, nitrile and/or ester are subsequently polymerized. In the examples, (1) a vinyl chloride-octyl fumarate copolymer is grafted with butadiene and methyl methacrylate using lauroyl peroxide as catalyst, (2) acrylonitrile replaces the methacrylate, (3) 2- ethylhexyl acrylate and acrylonitrile replace the fumarate and methacrylate, respectively and (4) vinyl stearate replaces the fumarate. The resins produced are compounded with ditridecyl phthalate, calcium stearate and lead phthalate and gelled prior to being cross-linked by heating with dicumyl peroxide and tetraallyloxyethane. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 961,940.
