abstract Steroids of the Formul[mu] (1a) or (Ib) or mixtures thereof are prepared by dehydration of steroids of the Formul[mu] (IV) or (II) or by catalytic hydrogenation of steroids of the Formula (III) R1 is C 1-6 alkyl R is H, OH, etherified OH derived from C 1-6 alcohols, C 1-6 alkyl or C 1-6 alkanoyloxy in (Ia), (Ib) and (IV) X is CO or a ketal thereof containing up to 6 carbon atoms in the ketal moiety, CHOH, (C 1-6 alkanoyloxy)- methylene, or etherified hydroxymethylene in which the ether group is derived from C 1-6 - alcohol, and in (II) and (III) X has all these values except CO and CHOH. In the products R and X groups may be interconverted by standard procedures. The dehydration is preferably effected with a mineral acid, and leads to the stated mixture of products, which may be separated by standard procedures. Particularly for 17-ol products (and also for 17- one products) the product (Ia) can be obtained from the mixture by chromic acid oxidation with oxidative destruction of the (Ib) products. The catalytic hydrogenation is suitably achieved in the presence of palladized charcoal. Novel steroids have the Formula (Ia) wherein R1 and R are as defined above and X is alkoxy-, alkanoyloxy- or alkylenedioxy-methylene as defined above, with the proviso that R1 contains at least 2 carbon atoms when X is alkanoyloxymethylene and R is H or alkanoyloxy or when X is alkylenedioxymethylene and R is OH or an ether thereof or alkanoyloxy. The starting materials are prepared as described in British Specifications 1,187,114, 1,196,642 and 1,196,643. All the above steroids can be in the d-form or in mixtures thereof with the l-form, including racemates. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise the novel gona-1,3,5(10),6,8-pentaenes, having estrogenic activity, and carriers therefor.
