titleOfInvention METHOD OF PREPARATION OF QUATERNARY TRIALKYL AND TRIARYL PHOSPHONIC COMPOUNDS.
abstract Quaternary trialkyl and triaryl phosphonium compounds are prepared by reacting the reduction complex obtained in reducing an aldehyde, ketone, carboxylic acid or carboxylic ester with a metal hydride with a trialkyl or triaryl phosphine and a proton donor. The reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of an inert polar solvent or diluent, and specified proton donors are hydrohalogenic acids, ptoluene sulphonic acids and sulphuric acid. An important application is in the use of starting materials having the Vitamin A structure, and the resulting phosphonium compounds may be coupled, e.g. with Vitamin A aldehyde.
