titleOfInvention PROCEDURE FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF SHAPED STRUCTURES FROM COPOLYESTERS OF TEREPHTHAL ACID THAT CONTAINS ACID GROUPS IN THE POLYMER MOLECULE.
abstract Shaped polyester articles having an improved affinity for cationic dyes, brightening agents and anti-static agents and made by (1) reacting terephthalic acid (or ester-forming derivative thereof), ethylene glycol (or ester-forming derivative thereof) and 0À3 to 3À0% by weight based on the terephthalic acid of either 4,4-bis- (hydroxymethyl) - 1,2 - dithiacyclopentane or a mercaptal or thioketal containing free or esterified hydroxyl or carboxyl groups and of formula (A) where R is a hydrogen atom, or an alkyl, aryl, alkylaryl, halegenoaryl, alkoxyaryl, carboxyaryl or esterified carboxyaryl radical R1 has the same meaning as R or together with R forms a carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring Z is an aliphatic, aromatic or aliphatic radical carrying a carboxy or esterified carboxyl group, an aromatic or aliphatic-aromatic radical containing two carboxyl or esterified carboxyl groups, or an aliphatic radical containing a free or esterified hydroxyl group Z1 has the same meaning as Z or together with Z forms a 1,3- dithiane ring carrying as substituents the radicals X and Y in the 5-position, X being a hydroxyl, carboxyl, esterified hydroxyl or esterified carboxyl group or an aliphatic radical carrying a hydroxy, carboxyl, esterified hydroxyl or esterified carboxyl group, and Y being a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic radical carrying a hydroxyl, carboxyl, esterified hydroxyl or esterified carboxyl group, (b) shaping the polyester article from the melt and (c) treating the shaped article with an oxidizing agent, sulphuryl chloride or thionyl chloride. Suitable oxidizing agents are chlorous acid and its salts, aqueous solutions of chlorine, bromine or iodine and aqueous solutions of substances yielding chlorine or bromine (e.g. N-bromo- or N - chloro - succinimide, N - bromophthalimide or sodium p-toluene sulphonamine). Treatment may be effected in the presence of a mineral acid or a carrier substance, e.g. a chlorinated aromatic compound, an alkyl-aromatic compound or an aromatic ether.
