titleOfInvention | PROCEDURE FOR OBTAINING CELLULAR PLASTICS BASED ON EPOXY RESINS. |
abstract | Cellular plastic material comprising at least 40% by weight of epoxy resins, based on the total weight of the plastic material, is prepared by foaming the plastic material with from 2 to 30% by weight, based on the total weight of the plastic material, of a halohydrocarbon boiling at atmospheric pressure at a temperature between - 10 and + 80 DEG C. and initiating polymerization with at least one complex compound of boron trifluoride and an aromatic amine having a pK6 value within the range of from 9.0 to 16.0. Suitable aromatic amines have the formulae <FORM:1102189/C3/1> wherein R1 and R2 each represent a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radical which may be substituted, and R3 to R9 each have the meaning given for R1 and R2 or represent a halogen atom, a nitro group, a radical containing ether, thioether or sulphone groups, or primary, secondary or tertiary amino groups. Suitable halohydrocarbon blowing agenst are monofluorodichloromethane, monofluorotrichloromethane, 1,2,2-trifluorotrichloroethane, 1,1,2,2 - tetrafluorodichloroethane, methylene chloride, carbon tetrachloride and chloroform. Specified epoxy resins are reaction products of epichlorohydrin with polyhydric alcohols, in particular mono- and polynuclear polyvalent phenols, and with mono- and poly-amines and di- and polyglycidyl esters, and compounds obtained by epoxidation of open-chained or cyclic di- and poly-olefins, dienes, cyclic dienes or diolefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid esters. Telomers and cotelomers containing glycidyl ether and/or glycidyl ester groups are also mentioned. Epoxy resins obtained by reacting 2,2-di-phenylol propane with epichlorohydrin in an alkaline medium are preferably used. Up to 60% by weight of the epoxy resins may be replaced by other compounds which undergo cationic polymerization, e.g. cyclic ethers, cyclic acetals and lactones. Pore-regulating agents, such as silicone oils, fillers, dyestuffs, plasticizers and fire-retarding agents may be added to the mixture to be foamed. |
