titleOfInvention | PROCEDURE FOR PREPARING COPOLYMERS OF HIGH MOLECULAR WEIGHT. |
abstract | A substantially linear, amorphous, unsaturated, high molecular weight copolymer of an aliphatic polyene contains three double bonds, one of which is of the vinyl type, selected from 1,4,9-decatriene and alkyl and/or aryl substituted 1,4,9-decatriene with ethylene and/or an aliphatic a -olefin of the general formula R-CH=CH2, in which R is an alkyl group containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, said copolymer comprising macromolecules containing unsaturations and comprising monomer units deriving from each monomer used, each monomer unit deriving from a polyene containing a free double bond. In the examples, terpolymers are produced by copolymerizing 1,4,9 - decatriene or 1 - phenyl - decatriene-1,4,9 with ethylene and propylene or butene-1 the catalysts utilized being aluminium diethyl chloride with either vanadium tetrachloride, vanadyl chloride or vanadium triacetylacetonate or either aluminium diethyl monohydride, aluminium ethyl sesquichloride, aluminium trihexyl, or beryllium diethyl with vanadium tetrachloride. The polymerization is effected in n-heptane solution, and in one of the examples in the presence of hydrogen. The examples also include the use of zinc diethyl as a molecular weight regulator and the use of radio-active ethylene and radio-active 1,4,9-decatriene. The polymerization is terminated with a methanolic solution of phenyl-b -naphthylamine and the copolymer recovered in the conventional manner. In some of the examples the terpolymers are vulcanized using conventional vulcanizing ingredients either alone or after blending with a naphthenic oil. The Specification also mentions the use of catalyst complexing agents and that the polymerization may be continuous. |
