titleOfInvention AN AIR COOLING APPLIANCE FOR A MICROTOME
abstract Apparatus for cooling a micistone having a specimen holder 15 and a knife 13 for cutting a specimen 15a comprises an air conduit adapted to receive the holder and knife and means for directing a stream of cooled, dried air through the conduit. The micistone is supported on a table 11 and enclosed in a cover 19 which is hingedly connected to the table. The cooling apparatus is a separate unit comprising a refrigerating system the evaporator 36 of which is immersed in a liquid heat sink 33. The air conduit 41 includes a portion 42 in the hinged cover 19, a portion 43 connecting the portion 42 with the top of the heat sink housing 34 and a cooling chamber 44. The cooled, dried air passes from the heat sink 33 through the portions 43, 42 onto the specimen 15a and subsequently into the chamber 44. Liquid, for example calcium chloride, is pumped from the heat sink 33 through a hollow tube 51 and sprayed into the chamber 44. A blower 58 mounted on the tube 51 draws air through an aperture 47 in a partition 46 of the chamber 44, and returns the air via apertures 50 to the heat sink 33. The sprayed liquid is allanges to flow into a drain-tube 62 having its exit immersed in the liquid in the heat sink. The volume of liquid in the sink 33 is controlled by a float-operated valve 67. When the valve is closed the liquid collected in the tube 62 passes via a tube 70 into a boiler 71. A device for storing specimens in frozen condition preparatory to cutting sections therefrom comprises a reservoir of anti-freeze liquid which is connected in a closed circuit with a coil immersed in the liquid of the heat sink 33, and a magnetically operated pump. The specimens are supported on members having extensions which are immersed in the liquid of the reservoir.
