| abstract | A process for manufacturing a molded polylactide article comprising stereocomplex polylactide (sc-PLA), which process includes the following steps: a) mixing an amount of a first homopolylactide with an excess amount of a second homopolylactide in the molten state, to provide a molten blend, the first and second being homopolylactides different from each other, and selected from a homopolymer of poly-D-lactide (PDLA) and a homopolymer of poly-L-lactide (PLLA); b) solidifying the molten mixture and allowing it to crystallize to provide a solidified mixture comprising sc-PLA; c) mixing the solidified mixture with an additional quantity of the first homopolylactide in solid state, to provide a mixture of solids; d) molding the mixture of solids by melt processing the mixture of solids at a temperature higher than the melting temperature of the PDLA and PLLA homopolymers and lower than the melting temperature of sc-PLA, and cooling the mixture melt-processed at a temperature below the melting temperature of PDLA and PLLA homopolymers to provide a molded polylactide article comprising sc-PLA. |
