abstract |
A method of preparing a salt product comprising the steps of: (i) providing a mixture comprising sodium chloride and organic material dissolved in a solvent, said organic material being a solid under room temperature conditions; wherein the mixture comprises between 5% and 35% by weight of sodium chloride based on the weight of the solvent and further comprises between 0.1% and 20% by weight of the organic material based on the weight of the solvent; and (ii) atomizing said mixture to produce atomized droplets of the mixture and evaporating said solvent from the atomized droplets to produce a salt product comprising particles containing i) sodium chloride and ii) the organic material, said particles having said salt product a structure composed of individual crystallites of sodium chloride bound together in the particle, said particles of said salt product comprising hollow particles formed by an outer shell of said crystallites, wherein more than 95% of the particles have a size less than 50 μm; wherein: step (ii) is carried out by spray drying at an elevated temperature in the range of 100°C to 210°C; the organic material comprises at least one polymeric material; and the particle size is determined by laser light scattering. |
