abstract Process for selectively separating at least one first heavy metal having a first sulfide solubility from a liquid medium containing at least the first heavy metal in dissolved form, by the following steps: (a) contacting the liquid medium with a precipitate of a sulfide of at least one second heavy metal, wherein said sulfide of at least one second heavy metal has a second solubility, wherein said second solubility is greater than said first solubility, in a first reactor, to produce a precipitate of a sulfide of at least one first heavy metal and a solution containing at least one second heavy metal; (b) separating the precipitate of the at least one first heavy metal sulfide from the solution containing the at least one second heavy metal; (c) contacting the solution of the at least one second heavy metal with a source of sulfide produced by biological conversion of a sulfur compound, in a second reactor, to produce a precipitate of a sulfide of the at least one second heavy metal and a treated solution, and (d) returning at least part of the precipitated sulfide of the at least one second heavy metal to step (a).
