abstract | A chromatographic separation process for recovering a polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) product from a feed mixture, comprising introducing the feed mixture into one or more simulated or actual moving bed chromatographic apparatus having a plurality of chromatographic columns containing, as eluant, an aqueous organic solvent, in which the temperature of at least one of the chromatographic columns through which the feed mixture passes is higher than room temperature, in which the PUFA product comprises a PUFA or a PUFA derivative, wherein the derivative is a PUFA mono- or diglyceride, ester, phospholipid, amide, lactone or salt; and wherein the process is other than a chromatographic separation process for recovering a polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) product from a feed mixture, the process comprising introducing the feed mixture into a simulated moving bed chromatographic apparatus or actual having a plurality of connected chromatographic columns containing, as eluent, an aqueous alcohol, wherein the apparatus has a plurality of zones comprising at least a first zone and a second zone, each zone having an extract stream and a raffinate stream from which liquid may be collected from said plurality of connected chromatographic columns, and wherein (a) a raffinate stream containing PUFA product together with more polar components is collected from a column in the first zone and introduced into a non-adjacent column in the second zone, and/or (b) an extract stream containing the AGP product is collected I together with less polar components of a column in the second zone and is introduced into a non-adjacent column in the first zone, separating said PUFA product from different components of the feed mixture in each zone, a chromatographic separation process that is carried out carried out at a temperature between 15 and 55 °C. |
