titleOfInvention | Device for the oral administration of therapeutic compounds |
abstract | A swallowable device (10) for introducing a preparation of therapeutic agents (100, 101) into a wall of a patient's gastrointestinal (GI) tract, the device comprising: a swallowable capsule (20) sized to pass through the GI tube, the capsule having a capsule wall (20w, 21w); a deployment motor (130, 180) disposed within the capsule; a management mechanism (170) coupled to the deployment engine; at least one tissue-penetrating member (140) releasably coupled to the delivery mechanism, the tissue-penetrating member including a preparation of therapeutic agents for delivery into the intestinal wall, wherein the member(s) tissue penetrating members (40) are formed at least in part by the therapeutic agent preparation and wherein the tissue penetrating member is configured to be retained in the GI wall; and an aligner (160), wherein the aligner serves to align the tissue-penetrating members perpendicular to the surface of the GI wall to enhance and optimize penetration of the tissue-penetrating member into the GI wall. ; where the deployment engine is configured to deploy one or both of the management mechanism and the aligner; wherein at least a portion of the swallowable capsule is degraded by contact with liquids in the GI tract in a manner that allows those liquids to trigger delivery of the therapeutic agent by deployment of the deployment motor; wherein when the deployment motor is deployed, the tissue penetrating member(s) are configured to penetrate the GI wall, advance into the GI wall, and be retained on the GI wall to release the therapeutic agent preparation into the GI wall. the interior of the GI wall. |
