titleOfInvention Skin electrode detachment detection using electrocutaneous impedance
abstract Apparatus for providing transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy to a user, the apparatus comprising: stimulation means (105) for electrically stimulating at least one nerve to provide TENS therapy to the user; an electrode array (120) connectable to said stimulation means (105), said electrode array (120) comprising a plurality of electrodes (202, 204, 206, 208) for electrical stimulation of the at least one nerve for the purpose of providing TENS therapy to the user, said electrodes (202, 204, 206, 208) having a preformed geometry and known electrode-skin contact area size when in full contact with the user's skin; characterized in that the apparatus comprises monitoring means (505, 510) electrically connected to said stimulation means (105) for monitoring the impedance of electrical stimulation through said electrode array (120) while providing TENS therapy to the user; and analysis means (515) configured to analyze said impedance in order to estimate a change in the contact area between the electrodes and the skin, wherein the stimulation means (105) is configured to stop or reduce the electrical stimulation of the stimulation means when the analysis means (515) determines that the monitored impedance value has changed significantly, wherein the change in impedance value at a given time is quantified by an impedance ratio between the value of the current impedance and a baseline value.
