abstract |
A cover (1) for a colonoscope shaft (33), the cover (1) comprising an elongate tubular member (3) and being arranged for engagement over the colonoscope shaft (33) with the cover (1) extending along Along at least a part of the length of a distal end of the shaft, the tubular member (3) comprising an inner surface (7) at least a part of which grips the shaft (33) and holds the cover (1 ) in place and an outer surface comprising a plurality of spaced protruding elements (2) having a tip and a base that are movable between; a) a rest position and a position in which the tip of the protruding elements (2) are substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the colonoscope and; b) to a position that is at an angle approximately perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the colonoscope axis (33) such that said protruding elements (2) fan out to contact and provide support and dilate a wall of the lumen of a body passage into which the colonoscope has been inserted; wherein the protruding elements (2) are arranged as at least one ring that runs circumferentially around the cover (1), characterized in that the protruding elements (2) are in the form of hairs or bristles with a diameter between 0, 5 and 3.0 mm and a length between 4 and 20 mm from the base to the tip, and where each ring of the cover (1) comprises between 5 and 10 protruding elements (2). |
