abstract Shelf assembly (1020), comprising: a shelf panel (1024) having a top surface (1023) for supporting items (1026); and a hydrophobic surface applied in a spill containment pattern (1021) on the top surface (1023) of the shelf panel (1024) such that the hydrophobic surface defines a boundary of a central portion of the top surface (1023) of the shelf panel (1024), the hydrophobic surface comprising a layer of ceramic frit applied in the spill containment pattern on the upper surface (1023) of the shelf panel (1024) and a hydrophobic compound coated on the frit layer, comprising the hydrophobic surface a plurality of edge containment strips (1021a, 1021b, 1021c, 1021d), each edge containment strip (1021a, 1021b, 1021c, 1021d) arranged adjacent to one of a plurality of perimeter edges of the shelf panel (1024), and wherein: (a) the frit layer of at least one of the edge containment strips (1021a, 1021b, 1021c, 1021d) is offset inwardly from the respective perimeter edge d the shelf panel, or (b) the frit layer of each of the edge containment strips (1021a, 1021b, 1021c, 1021d) is located directly on a respective perimeter edge of the shelf panel.
