titleOfInvention Spinal distraction system
abstract A distraction system comprising: a distraction rod (206) having a first end and a second end, the first end being configured for attachment to a subject's spine at a first location, the second end containing a recess (212) having a threaded portion (218) disposed therein; an adjustable portion (208) configured for placement relative to the subject's spine at a second location other than the first, the adjustable portion (208) comprising a housing (226) containing a permanent magnet (254) configured to rotate about a longitudinal axis of rotation, the permanent magnet (254) being contained within a magnetic assembly (236) fixed at its end to a lead screw (260) by means of a locking pin (238) passing transversely through an aperture (264) provided in the lead screw (260) and at least a portion of the magnetic assembly (236), the spindle having first and second ends, the first end being operatively coupled to the threaded portion (218); wherein the spindle is substantially coaxial with the longitudinal axis of rotation of the permanent magnet and is configured to allow at least some angular displacement of the spindle relative to the longitudinal axis of rotation.
