abstract Calibration medium (1) for the calibration of a sensor (25) designed to check at least one optical property of valuable documents, presenting at least one characteristic substance layer (10, 20) and at least one support layer (2 ) for the characteristic substance layer (10, 20), the characteristic substance layer (10, 20) being a varnish layer in which the characteristic substance is dispersed in the form of particles (5), such that the characteristic substance - is a luminescent substance or an absorbing substance, and - is present in the calibration medium with a surface weight of less than 2,500 mg of characteristic substance per m2 of calibration medium, preferably less than 1,500 mg of characteristic substance per m2 of calibration medium, particularly preferably less than 300 mg of characteristic substance per m2 of calibration medium, characterized in that the characteristic substance - in the characteristic substance layer (10 , 20) is present in a concentration lower than 0.5% by weight, relative to the total weight of the calibration medium, and - has a D99 particle size of less than 10 μm, preferably less than 5 μm, particularly preferably less at 3 μm.
