titleOfInvention Removal of stream permanganate reducing compounds from the methanol carbonylation process
abstract Procedure for separating a mixture produced in the carbonylation of methanol comprising water, acetic acid, methyl iodide, methyl acetate, methanol, and at least one permanganate reducing compound (PRC) to reduce the amount of methyl iodide that is produced. eliminates as a residue from said process, which comprises the steps of: (a) distilling the mixture in a distillation column (22) to separate the mixture into a plurality of streams, at least one of said streams being an overhead stream enriched with PRC (52) comprising dimethyl ether; and (b) extracting the PRC-enriched overhead stream (52) with water, wherein said extraction comprises a first extraction step comprising contacting the PRC-enriched overhead stream (52) with water and separating it from the itself a first stream of aqueous extract (64) comprising said, at least, one PRC and a first raffinate stream (66), and a second extraction stage comprising contacting the first raffinate stream (66) with water and separating therefrom a second aqueous extract stream (70) comprising said at least one PRC and a second raffinate stream (72); wherein said PRC-enriched overhead stream (52) comprises an amount of dimethyl ether effective to reduce the solubility of methyl iodide in said aqueous extract streams (64; 70).
