titleOfInvention | Procedure to produce 1,2-propanediol from glycerol |
abstract | In a process for producing 1,2-propanediol by reacting a glycerol-containing feedstock with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenolysis catalyst effective to catalyze the reaction, the improvement comprising using a glycerol-containing feedstock containing less than 5 weight percent water, wherein the glycerol-containing feedstock consists of a process product recycle portion and a pure glycerol feedstock feed portion, said process further comprising a dehydration step for providing a glycerol-containing feedstock of the necessary dryness, made in one or more of the hydrogenolysis reaction crude product mixture, a glycerol-containing fraction of the crude product mixture, the glycerol feedstock pure or a combination of two or more of these and, in which the feed material containing glycerol is produced by steps comprising limiting the per pass conversion of glycerol in hydrogenolysis to less than complete conversion, substantially overhead distilling all of the water and lighter by-products in the resulting product mixture in a first separation column of water, passing the bottom products of the first water separation column towards a product recovery column, in which a marketable propylene glycol product with a purity of at least 95 percent at the top is recovered and the products of Glue are used as the product recycling part of the hydrogenolysis process. |
