abstract A system for determining the structural characteristics of an object, comprising: a device (1004, 104) for subjecting the object to an energy application procedure; and a computer (164) coupled to said device and adapted to determine the structural characteristics of said object; wherein the device (100, 104) comprises: a housing (132) with an open end (132a) and a longitudinal axis; a power application tool (120) mounted within the housing for axial movement along the longitudinal axis of the housing; a sleeve (108) projecting from the open end of the housing, said sleeve (108) comprising a free end (116) and adapted for contact with said object; a flange (110) extending from a portion of said sleeve substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the housing and having a surface contact object substantially perpendicular to the object contact portion of the free end of the sleeve; and a drive mechanism (160) supported within the housing and adapted for movement of the power application tool between a retracted and an extended position, said drive mechanism further comprising a measuring device and / or detection (160a, 160b) for measuring and / or detecting the displacement of the energy application tool or the response of the object to the energy applied with the energy application tool; and wherein the computer is adapted to determine the structural characteristics of the object based on said measurements.
