abstract | A method of improving the corrosion resistance, wear resistance and contact resistance of a metal substrate, said metal substrate is selected from nickel-based, iron-based and precious metal substrates, which comprise a layer of copper or copper alloy as a top layer on a surface thereof, wherein the top layer is an incomplete surface coverage that exposes the metal substrate; the method comprising: exposing the substrate to a composition comprising a phosphorous oxide compound selected from the group consisting of a phosphonic acid, a phosphonate salt, a phosphonate ester, a phosphoric acid, a phosphate salt, a phosphate ester, and combinations thereof; an organic nitrogen-containing compound selected from the group consisting of primary amine, secondary amine, tertiary amine, nitrogen-comprising aromatic heterocycle, and combinations thereof; an alcohol having a boiling point of at least 90 ° C; and wherein the phosphorous oxide compound reacts with and transmits a protective organic film on any metal of the exposed metal substrate that is exposed due to incomplete surface coverage. |
