titleOfInvention Device for reading test results and manufacturing procedure
abstract A test result reading apparatus for use with an assay in which a detectable substance tends to accumulate within a detection zone (4) of the test, the reading apparatus comprising: a housing or baffle (18), which it has a window (8) inside; a light source (2) emitting light through the window to illuminate the assay detection zone; and a light detector (6) for detecting the amount of light reflected and / or transmitted by the detection zone, the amount of which depends, at least in part, on the amount of detectable substance accumulated in the detection zone; characterized in that the shape of the window is adapted to make the reading apparatus insensitive to minor positioning errors of the detection zone by a displacement of up to +/- 0.4 mm, relative to one or more of the window , the light source and the light detector, wherein the reading apparatus is insensitive if, for a fixed intensity of light energy output from the light source, and for a fixed amount of detectable substance in the detection zone , the amount of light detected by the light detector varies by less than 10% compared to the amount of light detected by the light detector when the detection zone is in its intended position, the shape of the window that can be obtained by a process comprising measuring the relative signal intensity recorded by the detector at different positions with respect to the window to generate a relative signal intensity map for different relative offsets of the detection zone from the central axis to the window, the shape of the window being then adjusted to provide an inverse effect to counteract the effect on the relative signal intensity of said relative displacement of the detection zone; in which the window is not rectangular.
