abstract A container for inhibiting or preventing the growth of microbes and / or for killing microbes in a closed container having a product located therein, the container comprising: a. a closed container defining an interior space therein; b. a product provided within the interior space; c. an empty space formed within a volume of the interior space that is not occupied by the product; and d. an antimicrobial release agent disposed within the interior space, releasing the antimicrobial release agent chlorine dioxide gas into the void space by reacting moisture with the antimicrobial release agent, wherein the antimicrobial release agent is provided in at least a filled polymer article located within the interior space, the filled polymer article comprising a monolithic material including a base polymer, the antimicrobial release agent, and a channeling agent, wherein the monolithic material includes channels through the polymer filled forms of the channeling agent, wherein the base polymer is a polypropylene, polyethylene, polyisoprene, polybutadiene, polybutene, polysiloxane, polycarbonate, polyamide, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, ethylene-methacrylate copolymer, poly (chloride vinyl), polystyrene, polyester, polyanhydride, polyacrylonitrile, polysulfone, ester p olyacrylic, polyurethane, polyacetal or a copolymer or a mixture thereof, and in which the channeling agent is a polyethylene glycol (PEG), ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH), poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVOH), glycerin-polyamine , polyurethane, poly (carboxylic acid), propylene oxide monobutyl ether polymerizate, propylene oxide polymerizate, ethylene vinyl acetate, nylon 6, nylon 66, or a mixture thereof.
