titleOfInvention Medical connectors with fluid resistant mating interfaces
abstract A medical coupling system (20, 1000) for transferring medical fluid comprising: a first connector (100, 1100) configured to transition between an open configuration and a closed configuration, the first connector comprising: a male part with a tight seal internal deformable tip (119, 1119), the male part comprising an internal fluid passageway (156, 1156); a valve member (116, 1116) located at least partially in an interior space of the male portion and configured to transition between an open position and a closed position, the valve member comprising a first closed end and a second end, and a first mating surface (146, 1146) at the first closed end of the valve member, wherein the first closed end of the valve member is configured to inhibit the passage of fluid from within the male portion beyond the first end closing of the valve member when the valve member is in the closed position; and a biasing member (118, 1117) configured to bias the valve member toward the closed position; wherein the deformable tip internal seal is configured to clean the valve member as the valve member passes between the open position and the closed position, and a second connector (400, 1400) configured to transition between a open configuration and a closed configuration, the second connector comprising: a first end (402, 1402) configured to receive the male portion of the first connector; a fluid conduit (480, 1480) located at least partially within an interior space of the second connector and having a closed first end (482, 1482), a second end (484, 1484), a conduit passageway ( 418, 1418) extending into the fluid conduit between the first closed end and the second end of the fluid conduit, at least one hole (488, 1488) near the first closed end of the fluid conduit extending through the fluid conduit and within the passageway of the conduit, and a second mating surface (486, 1486) configured to releasably engage the first mating surface (146, 1146) of the valve member; and a deformable seal member (460, 1460) located at least partially within the interior space of the second connector and having a first end with a mating surface (466, 1466) that is exposed to a region outside of the second connector at the closed configuration, a second end and an opening (470, 1470) in the first end of the sealing element sized and shaped to correspond to the size and shape of the first closed end of the fluid conduit, the sealing element being configured to contact the fluid conduit to inhibit the exit of fluid from the passageway of the conduit through the at least one orifice of the fluid conduit when the second connector is in the closed configuration; a push portion (464, 1464, 5464) of the seal member (460, 1460) located within the interior space of the second connector configured to push the seal member to the closed position; wherein the first connector and the second connector are configured to connect to each other such that the valve member goes into the open position and the second connector goes into the open configuration when the first connector is connected to the second connector, wherein the first mating surface and the second mating surface are configured to mate with each other so as to resist the ingress of fluid between the first mating surface and the second mating surface when fluid flows through the first and second connectors allowing fluid to flow through the first and second connectors. an outer periphery of the first engagement surface contacts an outer periphery of the second engagement surface during engagement.
