abstract | A gum base comprising: a) a hydrophilic precursor component comprising hydrolyzable units; and b) a copolymer of a hydrophilic monomer with a second monomer selected from vinyl acetate, isobutylene, isoprene, butyl rubber, or styrene butadiene; wherein the hydrophilic precursor component is at least partially encapsulated or dispersed within a barrier material; and wherein the barrier material comprises a substance possessing a nucleophilic group capable of reacting with the hydrolyzable units of the hydrophilic precursor component, wherein the barrier material is selected from oils and fats, and hydrogenated products and emulsions thereof; and wherein the barrier material is capable of reacting with an outer layer of the hydrophilic precursor component comprising hydrolyzable units to form a layer comprising a reaction product of the barrier material and the outer layer of the hydrophilic precursor component, between the barrier and the hydrophilic precursor component. |
