abstract A process for forming sufentanil citrate from sufentanil base, the process comprising: (a) contacting the sufentanil base with a non-aqueous polar solvent to form a mixture, wherein the volume-to-mass ratio (ml: g ) of the non-aqueous polar solvent to the sufentanil base is 2: 1 to 12: 1 and the contacting occurs at a temperature of 70 ° C to 90 ° C; (b) contacting the mixture with citric acid to form a sufentanil citrate mixture, wherein contacting occurs at a temperature of 70 ° C to 90 ° C and the sufentanil citrate mixture is free of a oil phase; (c) cooling the sufentanil citrate mixture to a temperature of 50 ° C to 60 ° C to form solid sufentanil citrate; and (d) recovering the sufentanil citrate at a temperature of 50 ° C to 60 ° C.
