abstract A prosthetic heart valve comprising: an annular support structure including (1) an annular stent zone (200; 1200; 2200, 4200; 5200; 6200; 7200; 8200), and (2) a hoop zone (100 ; 1,100; 2,100; 4,100; 5,100; 6,100; 7,100; 8,100; 9,100; 10,100) that is substantially concentric with the stent zone but is downstream of the stent zone in the direction of blood flow when the valve is in use in a patient, the stent zone having an outflow blood flow region including a plurality of annularly spaced free end commissure tips (236; 1236; 2236) wherein the stent zone is closest to the ring zone , the hoop area being connected to the stent area substantially solely by flexible strut structures (280; 1280; 2280; 4280) extending from the stent area to the hoop area adjacent the commissure tips, starting each of the strut structures from a respective point or points (23 2) in the stent frame that are farther from the hoop area than the commissure tips; and a plurality of valve leaflets (500) supported by the stent region, the hoop region being far enough downstream from the stent region that the leaflets cannot contact the hoop region; characterized in that the ring zone is more resistant to annular compression than the stent zone.
