abstract |
An activin type II receptor inhibitor for use in a method for treating anemia, beta thalassemia, or for increasing levels of red blood cells or orthochromatic erythroblasts (Ery-C) in a subject in need thereof, wherein the method comprises : (a) assess the level and / or activity of GDF11 in a tissue sample from the subject, and (b) if the level and / or activity of GDF11 is elevated above the normal level and / or activity of GDF11, administer an inhibitor of the activin type II receptor to the subject, wherein the activin type II receptor inhibitor is a polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of: ** Table ** wherein the activin type II receptor inhibitor it is a polypeptide comprising the extracellular domain of the activin type IIA receptor bound to the Fc portion of an antibody; or wherein the activin type II receptor inhibitor is a polypeptide comprising the extracellular domain of the activin type IIB receptor bound to the Fc portion of an antibody. |
