titleOfInvention Customized bicarbonate maintenance systems and methods for sorbent-based hemodialysis
abstract A dialysis system, comprising: a dialysate flow path (30), and the dialysate flow path comprises a dialyzer (20), a dialysate pump (48), and a bicarbonate source (34); and a processor programmed to obtain one or more patient parameters and one or more system parameters and to establish a flow rate of bicarbonate from the bicarbonate source to the dialysate flow path to achieve a target concentration of bicarbonate in the patient, in where the processor sets the flow rate of bicarbonate from the bicarbonate source to the dialysate flow path based on a user-specified level of post-dialysis bicarbonate, whose user-specified level of post-dialysis bicarbonate corresponds to the concentration Patient Bicarbonate Target, and whereby the user is instructed by the system to use this target to adjust the bicarbonate flow rate.
