abstract | A system (100) for determining the structural characteristics of an object (112), comprising: a handpiece (104) and a computer (164) coupled to said handpiece, wherein the handpiece (104) It comprises: a housing (132) with an open end (132a) and a longitudinal axis; a power application tool (120) mounted within the housing for axial movement along the longitudinal axis of the housing; a sleeve (108) projecting from the open end (132a) of the housing, said sleeve (108) being adapted to contact said object (112) with at least a portion of its open end (116); a tab (110) extending from a portion of said sleeve (108), said tab (110) being substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the housing and having an object contacting surface substantially perpendicular to the object contacting portion from the open end of the sleeve; and a drive mechanism (160) supported within the housing, said drive mechanism (160) adapted to move the power application tool (120) between a retracted and an extended shape, said drive mechanism (160) further comprising a measuring and / or sensing device (160a, 160b) positioned within said handpiece (104) and adapted to measure and / or detect the displacement of the energy application tool or the response of the object to the applied energy with the power application tool; and wherein the computer (164) is adapted to control the handpiece (104) and to analyze the collected data to determine the structural characteristics of the object (112). |
