abstract Method for coating a nuclear fuel rod sheath (22) containing ceramic for a nuclear water reactor, comprising: providing the sheath (22), comprising: a tubular wall (21) having an inner surface (23) and an outer surface (25); a cavity (27) formed by the tubular wall (21); a first open end (31a); and a second open end (31b); providing a first end plug (26a) and a second end plug (26b); insert the first end plug (26a) into the first open end (31a) of the sheath (22); seal the first end plug (26a); filling the fuel rod sheath (22) with nuclear fuel (20) and a retention device (24); insert the second end plug (26b) into the open second end (31b) of the sheath (22); seal the second end plug (26b); pressurize the cavity (27); providing a first composition comprising an oxidation resistant material; providing a second composition comprising silicon carbide; applying the first composition to at least a part of the outer surface (25) of the sheath (22) to form a first outer coating (33); and applying the second composition to at least a portion of the first outer shell (33) to form a second outer shell (51), comprising: depositing SiC reinforced fibers (62) having gaps (64) formed between at least one portion of the fibers (62) reinforced with SiC; and depositing a SiC material (66) to at least partially fill the voids (64) formed between at least a part of the fibers (62) reinforced with SiC; wherein the second outer shell (51) substantially encapsulates the outer surface of the sheath (22).
