titleOfInvention | PROCEDURE FOR THE POLYMERATION OF A CONJUGATED DIENE |
abstract | Polymers of conjugated dienes are made by polymerizing a diene in the presence of a catalyst that contains lithium and/or lithium compounds, at a temperature from 0 DEG C. to 100 DEG C. in an inert atmosphere, by adding the catalyst, "essentially continuously" to a mixture of the diene and solvent until the polymerization begins. By the expression "essentially continuously" means that the catalyst is fed into the reactor as a continuous stream without interruption, or incrementally at short time intervals. The catalyst is an alkyl lithium compound, admixed if desired with lithium metal, a lithium amide or a transition metal halide. Exemplified catalysts are n-butyl, and sec-butyl lithium, and an equimolar mixture of lithium isopropoxide and amyl lithium. The diene may be butadiene or isoprene. The solvent may be isopentane, or a mixture of amylenes. |
