titleOfInvention | Tear implants and related methods |
abstract | A method for manufacturing a tear implant that can be inserted into a tear canaliculus, the implant comprising a therapeutic agent, the method comprising the step of providing an implant body (302, 1802), which includes the first (304, 1804) and second (306, 1806) portions, the implant body extending from a proximal end (308, 1808) of the first portion to a distal end (310, 1810) of the second portion; the first portion that includes a cavity (318) near the proximal end; the proximal end of the first portion defining a longitudinal proximal axis (312) and the distal end of the second portion defining a longitudinal distal axis (314); the implant body that is configured such that, when implanted in the tear canaliculus, there is an angled intersection (316) between the proximal axis and the distal axis to press at least a portion of the implant body against at least a portion of the lacrimal canaliculus located at or more distal to a canalicular curvature; and wherein the second portion of the implant body includes a longitudinal length having a magnitude less than four times a longitudinal length of the first portion of the implant body; The method further comprises the step of arranging a medicament insert (322, 324) in the cavity, the medicament insert comprises a plurality of therapeutic agent inclusions (360) distributed in a matrix (362) to provide a sustained release of the agent , the medicament insert having a sheath body disposed on at least a portion of the insert to define at least one exposed surface insert located at or near the proximal end of the first portion of the implant body. |
