titleOfInvention | Process for the preparation of higher alcohols from lower alcohols by condensation of Guerbet |
abstract | A continuous process for preparing n-butanol, the process comprising: forming a reaction mixture comprising ethanol, hydrogen, water and acetaldehyde, the reaction mixture comprising a hydrogen to ethanol molar ratio of 0.1: 1 to 5: 1 , a molar ratio of acetaldehyde to ethanol of 0.001: 1 to 0.1: 1 and a molar ratio of water to ethanol of less than 0.05: 1; and contacting the reaction mixture with a Guerbet catalyst in a gas phase reactor having a fixed catalyst bed at a reaction temperature of 50 ° C to 450 ° C and a reaction pressure of 1 MPa absolute (10 bara) at 20 MPa absolute (200 bara) to form a reactor product stream comprising n-butanol, where the Guerbet catalyst is a metal oxide catalyst, and where the ethanol-based n-butanol yield is 10 % to 35% and in which the selectivity towards nbutanol is 65% to 95%. |
