A variant of the BPIFB4 protein, which has an amino acid sequence with at least 85% homology to the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 1 or a fragment thereof and characterized in that the sequence of said variant or fragment comprises a valine at the position corresponding to position 229 of SEQ ID NO: 1, a threonine at the position corresponding to position 281 of SEQ ID NO: 1, a phenylalanine at a position corresponding to position 488 of SEQ ID NO: 1 and a threonine at a position corresponding to position 494 of SEQ ID NO: 1 and said variant or fragment has activity to increase eNOS activity and / or NO production, for use (i) in prevention, risk reduction, improvement or treatment of a pathology selected from hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, kidney failure, metabolic syndrome, stroke, myocardial infarction, erectile dysfunction, neurodegenerative diseases, multiple sclerosis, cognitive disorders, retinal degeneration, uveoretinitis, vascular retinopathy, glaucoma, coronary spastic angina, thrombosis, pulmonary hypertension, preeclampsia, vasculitis, inflammatory disorders and venous insufficiency; or (ii) in the improvement of post-exercise fatigue in muscular dystrophy or as an adjunct in the implantation of one or more stents for vascular occlusions. |
